Chapter Eleven
When Dmitri walked out onto the deck, a tall male stepped forward. He looked enough like Jacque that it had to be his brother, Louis LaForge.
âHow is she?â he asked Mikhail.
âExhausted but well.â
He gave a curt nod. âIâll keep a watch over them.â He finally turned his gaze toward Dmitri. Like every other male heâd encountered in this pack, he was tough and dangerous. âWatch yourself, wolf.â
Another male might have bristled at the warning, but he was used to being tested at every turn. âDonât you worry about me,â he drawled. The implication being it was them who should be concerned. His kind often said a lot without actually saying anything.
Rather than get angry, Louis grinned. âWeâll see, wolf. Weâll see.â He faded back into the shadows.
âCome on.â Mikhail stripped off his shirt and tossed it over the railing. He had to be pushing ninety, but youâd never say it by looking at him. He was in prime condition. Werewolf genetics really were impressive. âLetâs see what youâve got.â
Taking up the challenge, he yanked his T-shirt off and dropped it on the porch. They werenât alone. There were at least three others watching. Fuck them. They wanted a show, heâd give them one.
He discarded boots and socks and shucked his jeans. Eager to run, his wolf surged forward. There was none of the slow morphing of limbs and face. He went from human to wolf in a heartbeat. Heâd always been faster and stronger than those around him.
Hands on his hips, Mikhail nodded his approval. âI wondered if your wolf would be bigger. Size doesnât always translate.â He embraced the change, head flattening and jaw elongating. He fell forward, hands and feet becoming paws. Wasnât as fast as Dmitri, but it wasnât slow, either. The wolf in front of him was big, his coat mostly brown with reddish tones. Intelligent green eyes watched him.
With one last look over his shoulder, Mikhail bounded toward the woods. Heart pumping, senses on alert, Dmitri followed. The crisp March air was invigorating, the breeze light as they headed away from the house. There was a tug in his chest the farther away from Emma he went.
Sheâs safe. There were wolves surrounding her. If he wanted her pack to respect him, to allow him to stay, this was necessary. It chafed to have to prove himself to anyone at his age, but Mikhail wasnât just anybody. He was Emmaâs father.
Easily keeping pace, he wasnât surprised when another wolf joined them. Big bastard, too. Almost as big as Dmitri. The fur was a mixture of brown and blond, unusual for a wolf.
His other side was flanked by a smaller wolf with fur as black as midnight. He caught the scentâGator.
This wasnât a spur-of-the-moment decision by Mikhail. Somehow heâd planned this. They wanted to see what he was made of? Heâd damn well show them.
Lengthening his stride, he released his wolf. The huge beast, glorying in the freedom, took off. Leg muscles bunched and flexed. The air ruffled his fur.
